An imaging test was also conducted on the participants and the result showed they too had high production rate of inflammatory cells.
The researchers also found that people with higher exposure to PM2.5 and other pollutants produced additional inflammatory cells. The existence of particles can trigger the body’s nervous system and, consequently, cause an imbalance that spikes blood pressure and can surge the possibility of a heart attack and other related diseases.
“These findings implicate air pollution exposure as an underrecognized risk factor for cardiovascular disease and suggest therapeutic targets beyond pollution mitigation to lessen the cardiovascular impact of air pollution exposure,” according to Shady Abohashem, MD, Massachusetts General Hospital.
