Long-Term Exposure to Air Pollution May Increase the Risk of Epilepsy: A Time-Series Study

27 Dec 2021

Several studies have concluded that that long-time exposure to harmful pollutants may cause epilepsy that is a chronic non-communicable disease. It is affecting approximately 50 million people globally.

What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that may cause mild to severe seizures. It affects the central nervous system, leading to seizures or unfamiliar behavior, sensations, and occasionally unconsciousness. Impulsive seizure is the key sign of this disorder. It may cause some other health problems if it is not addressed in time.

As per WHO definition, “epilepsy is a chronic non-communicable disease of the brain that affects people of all ages.

Scientific findings evaluated that some specific air pollutants may contribute to triggering epileptic symptoms to the sensitive groups. Kuo-Liang Chiang in 2021, identified some air contaminants like CH4, NO, CO, NO2, and PM2.5 as key factors that may increase the risk of the neurological disorder. Moreover, the number of people diagnosed with epilepsy may increase during the winter when the air quality index gets worse.

People with epilepsy are at high risk of developing other health issues. They may experience some other problems such as limited access to academic opportunities, failure to get a driving license, blockades to start some specific professions, and limited access to health and life insurance.

Complication and condition in India

As several factors like metabolic, neuro-trauma and refractory hypertension may lead to epileptic conditions, likewise air pollutants are also found to be one of the key reasons for this neurological disorder. Since, the level of air pollution in India is alarming and increasing, therefore associated health conditions might be serious. If the seizures are not controllable through medicines, people should consider addressing the poor indoor air quality. Eliminating harmful air pollutants and other sources of pollution may help reduce recurrent seizure attacks.

Expert’s indications

Experts believe that the risk can be lessened by creating a pollutant-free indoor environment. The World Health Organization (WHO) passed a resolution on air pollution and epilepsy in May 2015, highlighting building an air quality monitoring system to enhance surveillance for the health problems caused by air pollutants. It stresses to encourage clean energy and technologies to address the poor AQI.

A modern high-grade air purification system can be helpful to control indoor air pollutants effectively with high-end filtration technologies. PetriMed CA Air Purification System is one of the most effective solutions to the increasing threats of air pollutants. It is a 3-storey system that includes filtration, built-in UV-C disinfector, and air ionizer. As per the specifications, the air purification system seems to be better and more effective than the ordinary air purifiers for homes. It is capable of arresting and destroying 99.999% of air pollutants and other indoor particles like pet dander, dust, mites, molds, and others.
